A century of power. That’s what the SWB Energie und Wasser Heizkraftwerk Nord represents. Right here on the Karlstraße this building stands a testament to Bonn’s energy history.

This isn’t just a power plant. It’s a place where history and innovation meet. For over a century this site has generated electricity for Bonn. It all began in 1899 with the first power station. Imagine the city then lit by this pioneering technology.

The plant wasn’t always fueled by natural gas. Initially it relied on coal. Steinkohle was used until 1914. Braunkohle took over after that powering the plant until 1998. Then came a major shift. A gas turbine was installed marking a transition to a cleaner fuel source.

This transition was not without incident. In 1994 a tragic accident occurred. A pipe burst killing six workers. A subsequent investigation revealed previously unknown deterioration processes in the boiler’s riser pipe.

The SWB Energie und Wasser Heizkraftwerk Nord didn’t stop evolving. The early 2000s saw plans to transform it into a combined cycle power plant. This ambitious project increased power production significantly. Construction began in 2010 culminating in the plant’s official opening in 2013. The plant now produces around half of Bonn’s electricity.

It has continued to expand its capabilities. Since 2018 the plant provides cooling. Two absorption chillers were installed. These now supply a district cooling network. The plant’s own technical facilities and office spaces benefit from this system. The new Bonn-Netz building also receives this cooling.

The SWB Energie und Wasser Heizkraftwerk Nord isn’t just about energy production. It embodies Bonn’s commitment to sustainable practices. A photovoltaic system on the roof generates additional renewable energy. However this plant is also the largest industrial emitter of nitrogen oxides in Bonn. It contributes to roughly 15% of the city’s nitrogen oxide emissions.

The SWB Energie und Wasser Heizkraftwerk Nord is much more than just a power station. It is a symbol of Bonn’s industrial heritage and its ongoing quest for sustainable energy solutions. This site played a pivotal role in the city’s development. It continues to shape its future. It’s a fascinating chapter in Bonn’s energy story. A story we’re only beginning to uncover.
