Perhaps, you’ve noticed the gentle hum of modern life blending with whispers of ancient times here in Virring. Virring is more than just a dot on the map. It’s a living storybook. I want to share some of its chapters with you today.
Virring emerges from the annals of history with its first mention in 1311 as Werringh. That old name echoes through the centuries. The suffix “-inge” hints at its ancient roots. Imagine this area centuries ago. Picture small farmsteads dotting the landscape.
Back in 1682, Virring was a small village. It consisted of just nine farms. These farms cultivated nearly 500 tønder land. That was taxed at 68.04 tønder hartkorn. The land was farmed using a four-field system. This system involved rotating crops. Two fields were in use. Two were left fallow.
Virring was once part of the Skanderborg cavalry district. This highlights its connection to the region’s military history. In 1779, a significant change occurred. Virring underwent land consolidation.
The Fruering-Vitved Savings Bank was founded in Virring in 1871. It served the community for many years. In 2011, it merged with Østjydsk Bank. Sadly, the branch closed in 2013. It consolidated with the Skanderborg branch.
Around the turn of the century, Virring included several distinct areas. These were Nedergaarde, Lille-Virring and Virring-Hede. The area boasted two schools, a community hall built in 1896, a cooperative dairy, and a mill. This shows Virring was a vibrant community.
Today, Virring is a town in East Jutland. In 2024, it had a population of 1,162. Virring lies close to the border with Aarhus Municipality. It is part of the Skanderborg Municipality.
The town has a supermarket, a hairdresser, Virring School, and a day-care center. There is also a small industrial area. Virring also features a large park called Virring Engen. Virring is a developing town. There has been significant construction in recent years. More is planned.
Buses connect Virring to Skanderborg, Aarhus, Horsens, and Vejle. This makes it well-connected to the surrounding region.
Virring stands as a testament to time. It has grown from a small village to a modern town. It retains its historical charm. As you explore Virring, remember its long and fascinating journey.
