Te Hihi

In 1914, a small schoolhouse emerged from the rural landscape of Karaka. This was Te Hihi School, built to serve the families working on the Yates Farm. Te Hihi School, nestled southwest of Auckland, has witnessed the transformation of Karaka over the decades. Te Hihi began as a full primary school, catering to the children of farm workers. The school’s motto, “Character, Kindness, Courtesy,” reflects its commitment to fostering a caring and respectful learning environment. Te Hihi School, though situated in a rural setting, draws students from a diverse range of communities. Children from local lifestyle properties, the rural village of Kingseat, and the urban areas of Hingaia and Papakura all come together at Te Hihi. The Karaka Historical Society, formed in 1997, has played a crucial role in preserving the area’s history. They have worked with Te Hihi School to record oral histories, capturing the stories and memories of local families. They’ve also created family boards showcasing the history of pioneering families in the area. These boards display photos, news clippings, and personal stories, creating a rich tapestry of the past. The historical society’s efforts extend beyond Te Hihi School. They have also documented wedding photographs, collected farming and tradesmen equipment, and established the Karaka Vintage Days. Their dedication to preserving the heritage of Karaka has enriched the community and provided valuable insights into its past.
