“Stump’s Hill” once stood here. Now we admire Beckenham Place Mansion. This grand building whispers tales of timber merchants lords and ladies and community spirit. Beckenham Place Mansion stands as a testament to changing times.
This magnificent Georgian building is more than bricks and mortar. It is a Grade II listed structure. This status reflects its architectural and historical significance. Beckenham Place Mansion is a south London gem.
Let’s step back in time. Imagine John Cator a timber merchant and politician. He acquired land in the 1760s. Cator built this mansion between 1760 and 1762. Peter Collinson Cator’s father-in-law visited. He described it as a “stately house in so delectable a situation”. The mansion was first known as Stump’s Hill. It was intended as a retreat from London’s hustle.
John Cator expanded the estate. He diverted the Southend to Beckenham road in 1785. This allowed for the creation of the lake. The parkland began to resemble what we see today.
The Cator family retained the mansion for generations. However they often leased it to tenants. A boys’ school Craven College occupied it for a time. Later it became Norwood Sanatorium.
In 1927 the London County Council purchased Beckenham Place. In 1929 the golf course opened. It became England’s first municipally owned course. During World War II the park served as a prisoner-of-war camp. Anti-aircraft batteries were installed for defense.
Beckenham Place Park passed to the Greater London Council in 1965. Lewisham Borough Council took over in 1972. Boundary changes in 1995 placed the entire park within Lewisham.
Look up at the ceilings. The plasterwork is possibly by Joseph Rose and Co. They worked at Chatsworth House and Kenwood House. The central hall boasts a gallery and a circular dome. The portico at the entrance came from Wricklemarsh House in Blackheath.
In 2016 Copeland took over the mansion. They breathed new life into it. They set up WiFi for resident artists and tenants. Lewisham Council redeveloped the park. A wild swimming lake and BMX track opened in 2019.
Beckenham Place Mansion stands as a reminder of the past. It is a place for community art wellbeing and recreation. It has evolved from a private estate to a public space. It provides various opportunities. Beckenham Place Mansion continues to be revitalized. It provides a space for all to enjoy.
