Small Huanglong Island, sometimes called Xiao Huanglong Dao, isn’t an island in the traditional sense. It’s a unique coastal formation in Sichuan Province, part of the much larger Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area. Small Huanglong Island is known for its travertine formations. These formations look like a golden dragon winding its way through the valley. Hence the nickname “Yellow Dragon.” The travertine deposits create colorful ponds and streams. They cascade down the hillside, creating a visual spectacle. The water in these ponds is incredibly clear. The vibrant turquoise color contrasts beautifully with the golden travertine. Small Huanglong Island sits within a larger region of incredible biodiversity. It is home to endangered species like the giant panda and the Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey. While visiting Small Huanglong Island within the Huanglong Scenic Area, be prepared for a high-altitude experience. The elevation ranges from 3,200 to 3,600 meters. Pace yourself and take advantage of the available oxygen if needed. This “Fairy Land on Earth” is a sight to behold.
