Sunlight streamed through the vibrant hues of the Engelfenster. These angel fragments, crafted by Rosemarie Vollmer, bathed the interior of the Petrus-Jakobus-Kirche in a warm, ethereal glow. Here, in Karlsruhe’s Nordweststadt, stands a testament to unity and modern architecture. The Petrus-Jakobus-Kirche isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of two congregations merging, their histories intertwined within these very walls. Completed in 2017, the church replaced two post-war structures. Architect Peter Krebs envisioned a space that reflected this union. He designed a building with a minimalist aesthetic. Natural light pours in from above, highlighting the natural materials. The exterior, a uniform facade of lime-washed brick, speaks to the harmony of the two congregations. Look closely at the windows. You’ll see a vibrant tapestry of red and blue. These are not mere decorations. They are fragments of the past, salvaged from the old Petrus and Jakobus churches. The red niches from St. Peter’s and the blue ribbons from St. James’s now share the same light, a physical representation of their shared future. The Petrus-Jakobus-Kirche also boasts a connection to the artistic world. The renowned glass artist, Graham Jones, created the large, colorful windows. Installed in 2005, they were originally part of the Jakobuskirche. Fourteen of these vibrant panels, with their dominant blues and yellows, found a new home in the Petrus-Jakobus-Kirche. Their abstract forms invite contemplation, echoing the themes of creation and the celestial city. The Petrus-Jakobus-Kirche is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living story, a vibrant blend of old and new, a symbol of community and faith.
