From 1838 onwards a vast pastoral run belonged to Thomas Chirnside. This land eventually became Chirnside Park. Generations of owners shaped this area until the 1920s. It was originally known as Mooroolbark Park. Around 1000 acres of fertile land were used for grazing and farming. Two natural springs provided water.

Chirnside Park’s story truly begins in 1921. George Chirnside moved his prized stud herds and the belongings from Werribee Park Mansion to Mooroolbark Park. This marked a significant shift in the area’s history. After George’s death in 1941 the estate’s sale was approved in 1950. This was finalized years later. The subdivision was approved in 1956 by the Shire of Lillydale. The residential heart centered around a beautiful two-story stone homestead. A country club and golf course were also built. The area was officially named Chirnside Park in 1962 honoring Thomas Chirnside.

Amadeo DeVincentiis an Italian immigrant owned a substantial portion of what is now Chirnside Park. He sold it for a surprisingly small sum in the 1960s. The buyers made a huge profit. DeVincentiis tried to reverse the sale but failed. The surrounding area previously called West Lilydale became known as Chirnside Park in the 1970s. A post office opened in September 1979.

Today Chirnside Park is a suburb of Melbourne and a satellite community of Lilydale. Local services are supplemented by nearby areas. The residential area originally developed around a large golf course. That course is now closed and replaced by a new housing estate named Cloverlea. New homes were constructed in the west and north. New medical facilities including the Chirnside Park Family Clinic have also been built.

Much of Chirnside Park retains a rural charm. It extends into the Yarra Valley. Commercial wineries orchards and livestock farms coexist with large residential estates. The Heritage Golf and Country Club designed by Jack Nicklaus is located in the northwest corner by the Yarra River. The Chirnside Park Shopping Centre is conveniently within the suburb. The suburb’s sporting scene is also vibrant with teams playing Australian Rules football netball and basketball. The Chirnside Park Panthers and St Edmunds Basketball Club are notable examples.

The story of Chirnside Park is a blend of rural heritage and modern development. It’s a place where history and the present day intertwine. The legacy of the Chirnside family is preserved in the name. The area continues to thrive as a dynamic suburb in Melbourne’s eastern reaches.
