Does anyone know why the Dölitzer Wassermühle is so special? It’s Leipzig’s last preserved watermill. This technical landmark stands proudly in Dölitz. The Dölitzer Wassermühle still boasts partially intact mill technology. Its charming mill yard has a history spanning over four centuries.

The Dölitzer Wassermühle was first mentioned in documents in 1540. But some think earlier structures existed by the Dölitzer Leinebach. Over the centuries, people rebuilt and expanded the mill several times. A fire almost destroyed the Dölitzer Wassermühle in October 1813. This happened during the Battle of Leipzig.

The current building of the Dölitzer Wassermühle dates back to 1814. It is a two-story timber-framed building within a courtyard. From 1920 to 1950 the mill stood still. But until 1974, the Dölitzer Wassermühle served as a gristmill. It was also used for grinding grain and spices. This continued until the last miller passed away.

In 1992, the non-profit organization Grün-Alternatives-Zentrum Leipzig e.V. dedicated itself to preserving the watermill and its courtyard. The organization hosts events each year. Since 2001, they have participated in the German Mill Day on Whit Monday. They also participate in the Day of the Open Monument on the second weekend in September. A Christmas market also takes place on the first Sunday in Advent.

The Dölitzer Wassermühle offers ideal conditions for environmental education programs. Experienced educators offer programs about grain to bread and sheep and wool. They also talk about honey and bees. They offer guided tours of the grounds for groups.

The main building and the neighboring Obermüllerhaus remain original. They were built in 1814. Economic areas and stables used to be on the south and east sides of the yard. Two timber-framed houses were integrated from the Leipzig area. This helped restore the farmstead’s historical style. These buildings were professionally renovated and ecologically restored.

The association aims to create a mill museum. It will feature a demonstration grinding process. The historic hydropower system has already been reactivated. In July and August, a summer cinema takes place on four weekends. A small Christmas market is held annually on the first Advent. Concerts, theater performances, and readings are planned for the unique courtyard.

In 2014, the Dölitzer Wassermühle celebrated the 200th anniversary. This marked the reconstruction after the devastating fire of 1813. The protected Vollhardthaus reopened with a photo exhibition in 2019. The house offers a beautiful setting for a small gallery.

Piece by piece, the renovation of the 200-year-old Dölitzer Wassermühle progresses. Local businesses support the project. For example, Peter Schouren supports the project. He is the manager and owner of Höning GmbH from Jesewitz. He regularly visits the festivals at the Dölitzer Wassermühle.

The Dölitzer Wassermühle is more than a building. It’s a testament to Leipzig’s industrial past. It shows the dedication of those preserving it for future generations.
