Who was Simone Séailles? That’s a question many Parisians might not know the answer to. But here on Rue Simone Séailles in Antony a quiet street whispers her extraordinary tale. This unassuming street honors a remarkable woman a French Resistance fighter during World War II.

Simone Séailles also known as Violette was a courageous agent for the Special Operations Executive SOE. She wasn’t just any agent. Simone was a vital link between the north of France and Paris. Her bravery extended to securing crucial funds for the Resistance. She was also a graduate of the prestigious ESPCI Paris a testament to her intellect and dedication.

Simone’s family was involved in the Resistance too. Her brother Pierre also served in the SOE. Their parents were kept unaware of their dangerous activities. Simone’s work was perilous. She constantly moved. Sometimes she slept in luxurious studios. Other times it was a squalid room or even a brothel. The risks were immense. Yet she persevered.

In 1943 Simone recruited her former classmate Nathalie Altovsky. Nathalie helped Pierre on several missions. She even tried to free prisoners from the Mauzac camp. Together Simone and Nathalie collected money for the Resistance and for London. Their efforts were a crucial lifeline.

Sadly Simone’s bravery had its price. She was arrested by the Gestapo. The arrest happened in a cafe on Avenue Wagram in Paris. She was imprisoned in Germany. She was then transferred to the Stalag II-A camp in Neubrandenburg. Even there Simone’s rebellious spirit shone. She circulated a petition to demand that political deportees not be forced to work. This act of defiance earned her eight days without food and a threat of hanging. Her courage despite the brutal consequences is a testament to her unwavering resolve.

Simone’s journey continued to Ravensbrück concentration camp. Her experiences there are a chilling reminder of the horrors of war. Eventually she was interned at Theresienstadt where she sadly passed away in May 1945. Her ashes were later returned to Antony to rest with her family.

Rue Simone Séailles is more than a street name. It’s a tribute to a woman who embodied courage resilience and unwavering dedication to her country. It’s a place to remember her sacrifice. It’s a reminder of the bravery of countless others who fought for freedom during World War II. As you walk along this street remember Simone Séailles. Remember her legacy. Remember the resistance.
