The pink facade glows. It’s breathtaking. This is the Capilla de San Miguel Arcangel.

This isn’t just any chapel. It’s a vital part of San Miguel de Allende’s history. The original structure dates back to the 17th century. It served the growing community of San Miguel El Grande a significant commercial and cultural center.

Construction began early. It was a modest chapel then. The main body was finished by 1683. However a wall was damaged. The tower and the main altar’s altarpiece were still missing. Architect Marco Antonio Sobraras oversaw the work. He followed the Baroque style popular at that time.

As the population boomed the need for a larger church became clear. The existing chapel was rebuilt around 1709. Between 1880 and 1890 master stonemason Zeferino Gutierrez crafted the current Neo-Gothic facade. He took inspiration from European cathedrals. He blended Gothic elements with indigenous styles. This beautifully integrated local culture and traditions.

The older towers were demolished. The new ones are stunning. The Neo-Gothic masterpiece is visible from almost anywhere in the city. It’s become one of Mexico’s most photographed churches.
