Béla Gruber was a Hungarian painter. He was one of the most promising artists of his generation emerging after 1956. His unique visual style set him apart. His early life was far from easy. His father was killed by the Russians in 1945. Béla and his twin sister were sent to the countryside. There they tended animals as part of a national aid program. At ten years old they returned to Budapest to live modestly. He had a burning passion for art. His application to the Secondary School of Fine Arts was rejected. He studied horticulture and animal husbandry. He later worked at the Óbuda shipyard. His talent shone through even there. He was transferred to the factory’s decoration department.
After twice being rejected by the Academy of Fine Arts he finally gained admission in 1956. He studied under renowned masters János Kmetty György Kádár and Aurél Bernáth. His relationship with his instructors was complex. He was once rebuked by György Kádár for not learning anything from him. Gruber famously replied “Fortunately Sir”. His final master Aurél Bernáth recognized Gruber’s unique genius. Bernáth delivered the eulogy at Gruber’s funeral.
Gruber’s most celebrated work is the six square-meter composition Studio. It was intended as his degree project. The painting depicts women models relatives and friends in a studio setting.
