Imagine a winter night in Paris. Two friends struggle to find a cab. That moment sparked an idea that revolutionized transportation. We are standing in front of Uber’s headquarters in San Francisco a company born from that very frustration.

Uber Technologies Inc. launched its ride-hailing app in 2009. It disrupted transportation making Uber the world’s most valuable startup.

Uber’s story officially began in Paris in 2008. Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp attended LeWeb a tech conference. Both had sold startups for large sums. Kalanick sold Red Swoosh. Camp sold StumbleUpon. They couldn’t get a cab one night. An epiphany struck them. What if you could request a ride from your phone?

The initial idea was a timeshare limo service ordered via an app. Camp continued to develop the idea after the conference and bought the domain UberCab.com.

Camp began working on a prototype as a side project in 2009. He persuaded Kalanick to join as UberCab’s chief incubator. The service was tested in New York in early 2010 with three cars. The official launch took place in San Francisco that May. Soon after the company shortened its name to Uber.

Ryan Graves was an important figure in Uber’s early days. He became CEO in early 2010. Kalanick took over as CEO in December 2010. Graves became the chief operating officer.

The Uber app’s ease fueled its popularity. With a tap users could order a ride. GPS pinpointed their location. The fare was automatically charged.

In 2010 Uber received its first major funding. First Round Capital led a 1.3 million dollar round. In early 2011 it raised another 11 million dollars. Uber expanded to New York Seattle and Paris.

In December 2011 Uber raised 37 million dollars in Series B financing. Menlo Ventures Jeff Bezos and Goldman Sachs participated. In 2012 Uber launched UberX. This provided a less expensive alternative to black car service.

Uber became the most valuable startup in the world by July 2015. Its valuation was 51 billion dollars. In June 2016 Uber raised 3.5 billion dollars from Saudi Arabia’s wealth fund.

Uber opened up about its finances for the first time in April 2017. It reported a global loss of 3.8 billion dollars for 2016.

The firm’s valuation dropped from 68 billion to 48 billion dollars by the following year. SoftBank Group bid for 20% of Uber’s stock at this lower valuation in 2018.

Uber’s May 2019 IPO made history. It was the biggest first-day dollar loss in IPO history in the United States. Uber was valued at 120 billion dollars by Wall Street analysts at one point.

Uber faced a rough year in 2017. A former Uber engineer outed the company for its sexist culture. The board called for an internal inquiry. This became known as the Holder Investigation. Kalanick resigned in June 2017. Dara Khosrowshahi took over as CEO.

Uber met fierce resistance from the taxi industry. The company hired David Plouffe a political strategist.

Uber uses an algorithm to increase prices based on supply and demand. This surge pricing has fueled negative feedback.

Taxi drivers in London Paris and Madrid protested against Uber in 2014. They claimed Uber created unfair competition.

In New York Uber mistakenly charged drivers commissions based on pretax earnings. A judge ruled that Uber drivers should be considered employees in some instances.

Uber has also faced claims of discrimination and harassment. In 2018 Uber paid 7 million dollars to settle a lawsuit alleging gender discrimination.

Uber launched its food delivery app Uber Eats in 2015. In July 2020 it acquired Postmates. In June 2022 Uber launched UberX Share.

Like other tech companies Uber pushed into driverless cars. Uber sold that division to Aurora in late 2020.

Uber’s name comes from the German word über. It means over or above.

Uber has made it easier for consumers to live without a car. Yet its convenience has been accompanied by controversies and court fights. As we stand here it’s clear Uber’s journey is far from over.
