Local Igorots helped construct the tunnel around 1936. It stretched 2.24 kilometers. It reached an average depth of 70 feet. This vast tunnel ran from the Pasig River to what is now Pembo and East Rembo.

When the Japanese occupied the Philippines in 1942, they seized Fort McKinley. They renamed it Sakura Heiei. The Japanese expanded the Historic Fort Bonifacio Tunnel Entrance. They used it as a bomb shelter against American air raids.

The Historic Fort Bonifacio Tunnel Entrance was last rehabilitated in 1976. Sadly, it closed to the public in 1995.

The Bases Conversion and Development Authority plans to transform the tunnel into a historical museum and tourist site. This plan includes the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, and the National Museum.
