“Remember Lockerbie,” a faint whisper seems to echo as we approach the Morrin Homestead. This land holds secrets of a family’s ambition and a town’s namesake. Welcome to a place touched by the Morrin legacy.

The Morrin Homestead whispers tales of Thomas Morrin. He was the man who left his mark on this land. Thomas journeyed from Canada to New Zealand. His brother William beckoned him. William had already established a successful business in Auckland.

In 1865, Thomas and his younger brother Samuel bought Cruickshank Smart & Co. It was an ironmonger and hardware store. They renamed it T&S Morrin. Thomas became deeply involved in the Piako area. In February 1874, he became the sole owner of 6859 acres of the Kuranui block. He actively bought and sold land near Morrinsville. But an economic downturn changed everything.

In 1879, Thomas sold half of his shares in the estate to John Studholme. The Bank of New Zealand then took control in 1895. Later the Assets Realisation Board took over.

It is a common mistake to assume both Thomas and Samuel lived in Morrinsville. Both brothers actually resided in Auckland. Thomas developed what he called the Lockerbie Estate. He named it after his family’s Scottish town.

Samuel, despite his partnership in T&S Morrin & Co., had little to do with Morrinsville directly. After 1884, Samuel was ill. He could not make business decisions. Thomas and Samuel were both born in Quebec, Canada.

Interestingly, another Morrin brother, William, lived in Auckland. He owned a grocery and wine business. His cousin John C Morrin was his partner. William named his land in Auckland Meadowbank. It was named after his father’s Canadian farm.

The town now known as Morrinsville was initially called Piako. The name changed over time to honor Thomas Morrin. The Morrin Homestead stands as a reminder of these times. It reminds us of the vision and eventual misfortune of Thomas Morrin.

The Morrin Homestead witnessed the establishment of essential services. A school, post office, churches, and a hotel sprung up. A creamery and tennis club soon followed. These amenities transformed the area.

Standing here, you can almost see Thomas Morrin surveying his vast estate. He dreamed of a thriving community. Though he faced financial ruin, his name lives on. It lives on in the town of Morrinsville. His story serves as a reminder of ambition, risk, and legacy. The Morrin Homestead connects us to the past.
