Who was Adelheid, and why does her name echo through these woods? Here at Adelheiden, nestled between Hegne and Dettingen, the story begins not with stones and mortar, but with a whisper of tragedy. Adelheiden was once a clearing, marked by a hollow oak tree, a place where a young woman named Adelheid B Böllerin sought refuge. Legend claims Adelheid, working in Wollmatingen, was attacked and left for dead. She crawled into the oak’s protective embrace. Her attacker returned, and despite her pleas, he ended her life. Adelheid’s courage in defending her honor transformed her into a local saint, the oak her shrine. Years passed. In 1355, the Abbot of Reichenau sold the “forest of Adelheiden”. Friedrich von Sulgen, a member of the Bishop’s court, established a small brotherhood here. His son, Eberhard, formalized the gift of “Hofstatt zur guten Adelheid” in 1370 to five Benedictine brothers. A chapel arose in 1373, dedicated to Mary, John the Baptist, and Bartholomew. But by 1379, the brotherhood vanished from records. Two Beguines settled on the grounds by the end of the 14th century, their numbers slowly growing. They embraced the Augustinian rule in 1436, their lives a quiet rhythm of prayer and work. Adelheiden remained small, rarely more than a dozen sisters, their income meager. They farmed, wove, nursed, and even begged to survive. They endured the Reformation, the Thirty Years’ War, and constant financial struggles. Adelheiden found a new purpose in the 17th century, caring for the sick and elderly. Their church was rebuilt around 1706, perhaps a sign of renewed prosperity. By the late 18th century, the community grew to 15 sisters. The 19th century brought an end to their peaceful existence. In 1803, the Teutonic Order took control, assessing their assets and finding them surprisingly solvent. They recommended leaving the sisters undisturbed. But in 1806, Adelheiden fell under the rule of the Grand Duchy of Baden. In 1808, the monastery was dissolved, its contents auctioned. The church and most buildings met the wrecking ball in 1810. The stones of Adelheiden, scattered, found new life elsewhere. Some of the church’s treasures now grace the parish church in Dettingen. The remaining buildings became the “Gasthaus Adelheiden”. Today, a farmhouse stands, a quiet echo of the lives lived, the prayers whispered, and the tragedy that began it all. Adelheiden: a place where sanctity and sorrow intertwined, leaving an enduring legacy.
