Gushing water a symphony of droplets. This is the Marcus-Brunnen. Right here in Bremen on the Liebfrauenkirchhof. This isn’t just any fountain. It’s a testament to Victor Marcus a man who served as Bremen’s mayor. He commissioned this beautiful work in 1908.
The Marcus-Brunnen stands as a symbol of civic pride. It was unveiled in 1909. Its design is breathtaking. The ten-sided base and basin are crafted from stone. The central column is made from blue shell limestone. It’s adorned with intricate carvings and five bronze putti. These cherubic figures hold toys or animals. Water gently cascades from them.
The inscription on the basin proudly proclaims “Gestiftet von Victor Marcus Dr jur Bürgermeister MCMVIIII”. This translates to “Donated by Victor Marcus Doctor of Law Mayor 1909”. Another inscription on the column reads “Gieb mir lebendig Wasser dass ich nicht ewig dürste (Joh Ev 4 15)”. This is a quote from the Gospel of John. It speaks of living water quenching eternal thirst.
Interestingly the fountain wasn’t always called the Marcus-Brunnen. For a time it was known as the “Taxibrunnen” or Taxi Fountain. This is because a taxi stand was located nearby. Taxi drivers took care of the fountain. They kept it clean and well-maintained.
The Marcus-Brunnen’s creation was linked to another important Bremen landmark. It was designed to draw attention to the Moltke Monument. Both the monument and the fountain were completed in 1909. The same artists were responsible for both projects. The Berliner architect Heinrich Jennen designed the fountain. The Munich sculptor Hermann Hahn created the beautiful bronze putti.
