Lost to time, the story of Outtrim begins with coal. The tall trees surrounding the Outtrim Recreation Reserve whisper tales of a once-thriving town. It transformed from farmland to a bustling mining hub in the late 19th century.

Outtrim emerged when coal was discovered in 1892. The Outtrim Coal Mining Company quickly registered. It was named after Alfred Richard Outtrim. He was the Victorian Minister of Mines.

Imagine bullock teams hauling coal. They made their way to the railhead at Jumbunna. The railway extended to Outtrim in 1896. This ensured coal reached markets efficiently.

Soon, the town of Outtrim grew quickly. It featured stores, houses, and essential amenities. A post office opened in 1894. There was also a police station, a hall, and even coffee palaces.

A school opened in 1890. At its peak, over 200 children filled its four rooms. This reflects a booming population. The surrounding farms supplied the town with food and timber. They even agisted horses and bullocks.

By 1901, Outtrim boasted a population of around 1700. By 1902, it had grown to about 2500. Five churches served the community. Nearly a dozen lodges attracted members. Recreation was important too. The Outtrim Recreation Reserve hosted cricket, football, tennis, and rifle shooting.

But a significant coal strike in 1903 changed Outtrim’s fate. Victorian Railways reduced rates for Outtrim coal. Mine management then cut wages and conditions. The strike lasted 70 long weeks. It spread to other mines. This caused Outtrim to decline rapidly.

The coal seams started to deplete by 1908. The opening of the Wonthaggi field in 1909 lured many miners away. Devastating fires in 1912 and 1913 destroyed much of the town. By 1913, only 700 residents remained. Buildings were moved away. The mine closed around 1918.

The Outtrim Post Office closed in 1957. From the 1920s, small companies worked old mines. They supplied coal locally and to Melbourne. This ended with the availability of cheap briquettes. The railway line closed in 1951.

Today, Outtrim has largely reverted to farmland. Dairying is the main enterprise. Beef cattle and sheep graze the land. The school closed in 1993. The community remains strong around the recreation reserve and hall.

The Outtrim Cemetery lies one kilometer east of the recreation reserve. Established around 1894, it is set in woodland. There are fifteen marked graves. The earliest dates from 1902. It is believed that 220 burials took place here. The cemetery is reserved for nature conservation.

Now, when you visit the Outtrim Recreation Reserve, remember the coal. Remember the boom and bust. Remember the resilience of a community that once thrived. While little remains of old Outtrim, its story remains.
