“Do you see that beautiful green canopy bed?” I ask. That’s where the story of the Mutter der Glaubenden begins. This isn’t just any shrine. It’s a place steeped in history. The Mutter der Glaubenden. The Mother of the Believers. It holds a special place in Karlsruhe’s heart.

Picture this. We’re transported back to 1489. We are in the Zisterzienserinnenklosterkirche Lichtenthal near Baden-Baden. Not Karlsruhe directly. But the art from this very church. This very altar! Influences what you see in the Mutter der Glaubenden. A magnificent altarpiece adorned the high altar. Two wings painted on both sides flanked the shrine. One side depicted the birth of Mary. The other. The Annunciation. The artistic marvel is now part of the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe’s collection.

The painting shows Saint Anne. She rests comfortably in that green bed. Legends say she bore Mary at an advanced age. Mary was destined to be the mother of Christ. Anne’s hands are clasped in prayer. She knows her daughter’s destiny. Joachim her husband kneels in prayer at the bed’s foot. A midwife and a maid stand nearby attending to Mary.

But look closer. The artist’s attention to detail is astounding. Note the still-life elements. A cabinet sits next to the bed. It holds a basin washcloth jug and pitcher a candle a book. Even a small wooden box. These are symbols of Mary’s purity. A burning bush depicted within the painting further emphasizes her sanctity.

The artist cleverly creates depth. Joachim’s robe and a bath tub draw you into the scene. This blends the painting with your very presence. It’s a masterclass in spatial illusion.

An inscription on the painting’s back wall gives us the finishing touch. It names the abbess of Lichtenthal at the time Margarethe. The daughter of Margrave Karl von Baden. She oversaw the monastery until her death in 1496. The inscription also dates the artwork to 1489.

This painting of the birth of Mary was part of a much larger altarpiece. Think of a magnificent structure at least 240 centimeters high and 300 centimeters wide. We only have the wings left. Yet that tells a powerful story of faith.

The Mutter der Glaubenden is more than just a shrine. It’s a window into the past. It reflects religious devotion and artistic skill. It connects us to a rich history. It’s a reminder of the enduring power of faith. It’s a story waiting to be rediscovered.
