Built in the 1890s Richmond Town Hall initially boasted a Venetian Gothic Revival style. Polychrome brickwork and a grand tower defined its presence. This majestic building stood proudly on Bridge Road. It served as the heart of Richmond. It was the central hub for civic life.

However the 1930s brought a transformation. A remodelling project saw the façade redesigned. The new style was Interwar Academic Classical Revival. Art Deco flourishes were added. It became the Richmond City Hall. The change reflected the evolving architectural tastes of the era.

The Richmond Town Hall wasn’t just a pretty face. It housed council chambers. It also provided public meeting spaces. Often it included a library and municipal offices. This fulfilled a vital role in the community. It served as a gathering place. It facilitated the workings of local government.

In 1991 a refurbishment project breathed new life into the Town Hall. Some sections though retained their Victorian charm. The rear of the building still showed original detailing. This blend of old and new is evident even today.

A significant moment arrived in 1994. The cities of Richmond Collingwood and Fitzroy amalgamated. They formed the City of Yarra. The Richmond Town Hall then became the new council’s headquarters. Its role shifted but its significance remained. It continues to be a symbol of local governance.

Step inside Richmond Town Hall. Imagine the hustle and bustle. Picture council meetings. Imagine lively debates. See the mayor’s balls. Imagine civic functions and community gatherings. This building has been a silent witness to countless moments in Richmond’s history. Its walls hold stories. They whisper secrets of triumphs and challenges. They embody the spirit of a community. The enduring presence of Richmond Town Hall stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Richmond itself. It is a building that still serves. It continues to connect people. It offers a connection to the rich history of this vibrant suburb.
