Unlocking the Past: A Tale of Two Churches at Pilgrim Uniting Church. Here at Pilgrim Uniting Church, a fascinating story of unity and architectural beauty unfolds. Pilgrim Uniting Church stands as a testament to the merging of two congregations. In 1969, the Stow Memorial Congregational Church and the Pirie Street Wesleyan Methodist Church, separated by a stone wall, decided to become one. The Stow Memorial Church, built in 1867 in the Revival Gothic style, became the home of the newly formed congregation. This building, originally designed to seat 1500 people, was constructed with stone from the Glen Osmond Quarry and dressed with freestone from the Glen Ewin Quarry. The front porch, a masterpiece crafted from French Caen limestone by stonemason Samuel Peters, features intricate carvings of fruits, flowers, and even a squirrel. This squirrel, a whimsical touch, was inspired by the architect Robert George Thomas’s pet. Upon merging, historical treasures from the Pirie Street church were incorporated into Pilgrim Uniting Church. These included ornately carved wooden panels from the pulpit, gallery railings, and memorial stained-glass windows. Pilgrim Uniting Church is also renowned for its two magnificent organs. The historic pipe organ, originally installed in the Pirie Street church in 1855, has undergone several reconstructions and expansions over the years. It eventually found its home in Pilgrim’s South Gallery in 1973, becoming the largest organ in South Australia. The second organ, a Continuo organ, was gifted to the church in 2010, adding another layer of musical richness to the church’s heritage. Pilgrim Uniting Church’s story is more than just a merger; it’s a tale of architectural preservation, historical significance, and the unifying power of music.
