Gazing at the simple cross atop St.Paul’s Anglican Church, one can almost hear echoes of its nearly century-long history. St.Paul’s Anglican Church stands here on Upper Serangoon Road, a testament to faith and community. Originally built in 1936, its story begins in the 1930s. A small group of Anglicans, mostly families of British military personnel, began worshipping together in a house on Upper Serangoon Road. As their numbers grew, the Anglican Diocese recognized the need for a dedicated space. In 1935, the land was purchased. George Rae Oehlers, a prominent Eurasian contractor and server at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, generously funded the construction in memory of his son, Harry. The foundation stone was laid in 1935 by Sir Andrew Caldecott, the Governor-elect of Hong Kong. St.Paul’s Anglican Church has seen renovations and extensions over the years. The parish hall, added in 1982, and further expansions in 1994, reflect the church’s growing role in the community. It’s more than just a place of worship. St.Paul’s is a vibrant hub, fostering spiritual growth from childhood to senior years and serving the community through outreach programs and its preschool, Little Seeds. From its humble beginnings as a house church to its current standing, St.Paul’s Anglican Church continues its mission, impacting the lives of many in the Hougang area and beyond.
