Picture the cobblestones beneath your feet. You stand on the Route du Pavé de Meudon. This isn’t just any road. This is a royal highway a pathway etched into history.

For centuries the Route du Pavé de Meudon served as the quickest route between Paris and Versailles. Kings and armies traversed its steep slopes. The incline is dramatic. It’s almost like climbing a mountain road. Snow and ice often made it impassable. From the summit however the views are breathtaking. The Route du Pavé de Meudon wasn’t always so challenging. Originally it followed a path from Paris through Meudon descending the Morval hill. Michel Le Tellier however rerouted it. He made it steeper. The royal family preferred the gentler Marivel valley. They avoided the strenuous ascent.

Tragedy struck the Route du Pavé de Meudon. One of France’s first railway lines crossed it. A catastrophic train accident occurred near Bellevue station. Dozens died including the explorer Dumont d’Urville. The year was 1842.

During World War I German planes bombed Meudon. Number 59 Rue des Gardes was hit. The Route du Pavé de Meudon bears witness to both grandeur and grief. Louis-Ferdinand Céline spent his last years at 25 ter Route des Gardes.

Today the Route du Pavé de Meudon is départementale 181. It connects to the N118. It has three names. Route des Gardes Route du Pavé des Gardes and Pavé des Gardes. This causes confusion.
