Before 1973, the municipality was known as Herstedernes Kommune. The Ministry of Interior did not accept a place name in plural form. So, it was renamed Albertslund. Albertslund grew rapidly in the 1960s. The population increased from approximately 3,000 to nearly 30,000 in about 10 years. The town features a unique traffic system.
