Behold the Goetzdenkmal a bronze bust proudly standing in Leipzig. This monument honors Ferdinand Goetz a remarkable figure. He was a physician and a pivotal leader in the German Gymnastics Association. Erected in 1926 it marks the centennial of his birth. The Goetzdenkmal stands in the garden of his former home at Lützner Strasse 11. It occupies a slightly elevated spot beneath the shade of oak trees.

The bust itself is larger than life. It’s crafted from dark patinated bronze. It rests atop a light marble pedestal. The entire structure reaches a height of 2.82 meters. The pedestal’s front displays a relief. This relief depicts a laurel wreath enclosing four intertwined Fs. This represents the Gymnastics Association motto “Frisch fromm fröhlich frei” meaning fresh devout cheerful free.

An inscription on the right side of the pedestal reads DEUTSCHE TURNER IHREM FUEHRER DR MED FERD GOETZ HERZ UND HAND DEM VATERLAND. The last words “Herz und Hand dem Vaterland” heart and hand to the fatherland were Goetz’s personal motto.

Ferdinand Goetz co-founded the German Gymnastics Association in 1868. He collaborated with Theodor Georgii. The organization became the world’s largest gymnastics association. Goetz served as its honorary secretary initially. Later he became chairman from 1895 until his death.

The monument itself is the product of a community effort. The Gymnastics Association collected donations to fund its creation. The Leipzig sculptor Carl Seffner designed the bust. He had known Goetz personally. The bronze casting was done by Noack. It was Seffner’s final monumental sculpture. The designer of the pedestal remains unknown. However Carl Iffland a Lindenau builder who performed the foundation work or Goetz’s son Paul are both possibilities.

The Goetzdenkmal was unveiled during Pentecost 1926. This coincided with Goetz’s 100th birthday. The Goetz-Haus Leipzig association rescued the decaying Goetz house and the monument itself. They completed renovations by the 2002 German Gymnastics Festival in Leipzig. The Goetzdenkmal stands today a testament to a man and his dedication to his country and his sport. It is a powerful symbol of Leipzig’s rich history and cultural heritage.
