Silent sentinels stand watch over Dartford. This British Tommy embodies sacrifice. We stand before the Dartford War Memorial. It honors those who fell in war. This monument is more than stone and bronze. It’s a testament to courage. It is a reminder of freedom’s cost.
The Dartford War Memorial commemorates the First World War. It also remembers the Second World War and the Korean War. Arthur G. Walker designed it in 1922. He was a sculptor and Royal Academy fellow. A.B. Burton of Thames Ditton cast the memorial.
Notice the bronze statue atop the granite pedestal. The British Tommy stands at ease. He rests his hands on his rifle. His face reflects calm resignation. Walker sketched the design from a real soldier. This soldier had returned from Flanders. The soldier corresponded with Walker. He even saw photos of the finished statue.
The pedestal has three sections. Bronze plaques adorn the base. They read: “To all who gave their lives for our freedom.” Another says: “To our dead of the Second World War 1939-1945.” The last one states: “To all who died in the Korean War 1950-53.”
Look closely at the central section. It lists the names of the fallen. Bronze plaques show a naval gun crew and a biplane. Over 300 names are inscribed here. Each name represents a life given.
The surbase bears inscriptions too. The main one reads: “In grateful memory of the gallant sons of this town, who fell in the fight for freedom 1914-1919.” Other inscriptions offer solace. They praise the fallen’s sacrifice. “Splendid you passed, the great surrender made, into the light that nevermore shall fade.” “All you had hoped for, all you had, you gave to save mankind – yourselves you scorned to save.” “Tranquil you lie, your knightly virtue proved your memory hallowed in the land you loved.”
The Dartford War Memorial faces Dartford Public Library. The memorial stands as a reminder. It calls to mind the town’s history. The memorial is the focus of Armistice Day.
