Trafalgar High School

Envision Trafalgar High School in its infancy. It’s 1964. The official opening ceremony is underway. The Honourable J. Bloomfield, MLA and Minister for Education, stands before a crowd. The air buzzes with anticipation for this new institution, Trafalgar High School. The school started humbly with classes held on the grounds of Trafalgar Primary School. Now, it has its own dedicated space. Trafalgar High School initially welcomed 95 pupils. The school has grown significantly since then, now serving students from Year 7 to Year 12. The journey to establish Trafalgar High School began a few years earlier. In 1961, a public meeting was held. A motion was passed, urging the creation of a high school in Trafalgar. This led to the construction of the Light Timber Construction Type 300 High School. This innovative building became the home of Trafalgar High School. By 1966, Trafalgar High School’s enrollment tripled to 300 students. A few years later, in 1971, the first graduating class celebrated their completion of the Higher School Certificate, now known as the VCE. Trafalgar High School continued to expand. In 1974, a new Trade Wing opened. The science room was extended. It included a new laboratory and a second science room. Community involvement played a crucial role in the school’s development. The Education Community Activity Centre, or ECA Centre, was opened in 1982 by the Hon. James C.M. Balfour. This further enriched the learning environment at Trafalgar High School. More recently, in 2009, Trafalgar High School received funding from the Victorian government. This allowed for the construction of a new building. The original structure also received much-needed refurbishment. Trafalgar High School continues to nurture young minds, fostering a sense of community and providing a quality education for students in Trafalgar, West Gippsland. It stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to education.
