Amidst the tranquil grounds of the Thistle Foundation in Edinburgh, stands the Robin Chapel. A poignant testament to love and loss, the Robin Chapel whispers tales of a son lost too soon and the enduring legacy forged in his memory. The Robin Chapel isn’t just a place of worship; it’s a living memorial, a beacon of ecumenical unity, and a testament to the power of remembrance. The Thistle Foundation itself, a haven for disabled armed forces personnel, was established in 1944 by Sir Francis and Lady Isabella Tudsbery. Their son, Robin, a Lieutenant in the Royal Horse Guards, was tragically killed in the final days of World War II. To honor him, his parents conceived and built the Robin Chapel, a place where all Christians, regardless of denomination, could find solace and community. Completed in 1953, the Robin Chapel was dedicated in a ceremony graced by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret. Designed by John F. Matthew in the Scottish Arts and Crafts style, the chapel’s interior is a symphony of artistry and symbolism. Stained glass windows, crafted by Sadie McLellan, depict scenes from John Bunyan’s “The Pilgrim’s Progress,” a fitting narrative for a space dedicated to spiritual journeys. Oak paneling and choir stalls, adorned with intricate carvings of animals and birds, pay tribute to Robin’s deep love for nature and the countryside surrounding his family home. These carvings, many crafted by Thomas Good, echo the natural world Robin cherished. The Robin Chapel’s dedication to ecumenical worship is beautifully encapsulated in the inscription above the entrance, borrowed from “The Pilgrim’s Progress”: “Come In, Come In, Eternal Glory Thou Shalt Win.” This open invitation is further reinforced by the chapel’s service sheet, which proclaims that every service is open to all Christians of any denomination. The chapel’s weekly Choral Evensong services, along with special services commemorating key events in Robin’s life, continue to draw people from all walks of faith. Even today, the chapel maintains its strong ties with the Blues and Royals. In 2015, the Sovereign’s Standard of the regiment was laid up in the chapel, marking a significant moment in its history. The Robin Chapel stands not only as a testament to a fallen son, but as a symbol of unity, remembrance, and the enduring power of faith in the face of loss. It beckons all to enter, to find peace, and to celebrate the life of Robin Tudsbery.
