Masjid Al-Azhar in Jakarta is more than just a mosque. It is a significant landmark. It stands as a testament to faith and education. Its story begins in 1952. Fourteen individuals from the Masyumi Party envisioned a mosque and school. Syamsudin the Indonesian Minister of Social Affairs supported this dream. They established the Islamic Dormitory School Foundation. The Jakarta mayor donated four hectares of land in Kebayoran Baru.
Hamka a prominent Indonesian ulama and activist played a crucial role. He advised building the mosque first. It should include ample office and meeting space. This allowed for activities even while the school was under construction. Construction began on November 19 1953. It concluded in 1958. It was inaugurated as Masjid Agung Kebayoran. At that time it was Jakarta’s largest mosque.
In 1960 Grand Imam Mahmud Shaltut of Al-Azhar University visited Jakarta. He suggested renaming the mosque Masjid Al-Azhar. This honored Hamka’s role. Hamka became the mosque’s Chief Imam. He saw the mosque as crucial. It would be a center for Muslim revival and the propagation of faith. The mosque became a focal point during the 1965-1966 anti-communist campaign.
