Deep within the Úrhegy hills of Biatorbágy lies the enigmatic Hild-pince. It’s a place shrouded in mystery, its story woven from whispers and fragments of the past. Hild-pince isn’t just a cellar. It’s a testament to a forgotten era. Imagine standing before a massive stone wall, six to eight meters high. These stones, carefully hewn and placed, guard the entrance to a world lost to time. A grand, arched gateway beckons, framed by remnants of a once-proud tympanum. Above, a broad stone staircase, flanked by carved balustrades, climbs towards the sky. This staircase once led to a sprawling terrace where a magnificent press house stood. Now, only scattered fragments remain. But the Hild-pince itself survives. Step through the imposing gateway, and you’ll find yourself in a vast, vaulted chamber. This isn’t your typical Úrhegy cellar. This is something different, something grander. The cellar consists of two main sections. First, a long, vaulted corridor stretches eight and a half meters, three meters wide and over three meters high. Beyond lies a larger chamber, thirteen and a half meters long, six meters wide, and four meters high, its ceiling a testament to the art of barrel vaulting. Look closely at the walls. You’ll see huge carved troughs, remnants of a time when wine flowed freely here. Hild-pince’s unique architecture sets it apart from the other cellars of the region. Its location, nestled on the northern, wooded slopes of the Úrhegy hill, further adds to its mystique. Old photographs from the 1970s and 1980s reveal a classical portico with Doric columns and a tympanum adorned with the monogram “J Z”. This grand entrance has since vanished, lost to the ravages of time. The identity of “J Z” remains a mystery. Locals often refer to the site as the “Hidl” or “Hidli” cellar, though “Hild-pince” is the more common name today. Research suggests the original owners were the Swabian Hirl family, who were expelled in 1946. The press house, abandoned and desolate, burned down that same year. An 1884 map shows the cellar belonging to Mihály Thoma, but his descendants have no recollection of any connection to the site. The mystery of Hild-pince deepens. Its classical style suggests a connection to the renowned Hild family of architects. József Hild is believed to have designed the Sándor-Metternich castle in Bia, and Károly Hild, a master stonemason, worked in the Bia quarry in the mid-19th century. Could Hild-pince be another of their creations? Perhaps the name is a blend of “Hild” and “Hirl,” a whisper of the past echoing through time. Today, Hild-pince stands as a silent sentinel, a reminder of a bygone era. It whispers tales of winemaking, of grand families, and of mysteries yet to be solved. Come, explore its depths, and let its story unfold.
