Within Bremerhaven’s quiet embrace lies Fehrmoor a place brimming with stories. This northern part of Bremerhaven offers a tranquil escape. Imagine a serene location tucked away on a large property.

Fehrmoor is more than just a location. It is a piece of Bremerhaven’s soul. Bremerhaven itself was founded in 1827. Bremen bought the land at the Weser’s mouth from Hanover. The goal was to keep its overseas trade share. The old inland port of Bremen was silting up. Bremerhaven became Bremen’s second harbor. It sits 50 km downstream. Trade and emigration to North America fueled rapid growth.

Bremerhaven’s history is complex. Tiny villages dotted swampy estuaries. Bremen gained control over the lower Weser in 1381. This included Bremerlehe. Swedish troops captured Bremerlehe in 1653. Despite orders to return it to Bremen, Swedish Bremen-Verden began a war. They later planned a fortified town. This later became Bremerhaven. Colonists tried to build a castle in 1672. It was to protect shipping to Bremen.

Bremerhaven faced rivalry. Hanover founded Geestemünde in 1845. Both towns thrived on trade, shipbuilding, and fishing. Bremerhaven expanded, taking Hanoverian land. Geestemünde and Lehe united as Wesermünde in 1924. In 1939, Bremerhaven joined Wesermünde under Prussian rule.

Bremerhaven was key for emigration. Many sought new lives in the USA and South America. The city suffered greatly in World War II. Allied bombing destroyed much of it. However, key port areas were spared. They were needed to supply Allied forces.

After the war, Wesermünde was a US-run enclave. In 1947, the city rejoined Bremen. It was renamed Bremerhaven. Today, Bremerhaven is part of the city-state of Bremen. Bremen owns the “overseas port” within Bremerhaven. Bremerhaven manages this area.

Bremerhaven’s port is significant. It is a major container port in Europe. Millions of cars pass through each year. Bremerhaven handles more cars than any other European city. A new lock replaced the old Kaiserschleuse in 2011.

Though modern, Bremerhaven retains its history. The Havenwelten showcase maritime heritage. The German Maritime Museum and Emigration Center are key attractions. The Klimahaus Bremerhaven explores climate change. Every five years, Sail Bremerhaven attracts tall ships.
