Lost in the grandeur of the Opéra de Marseille, did you ever imagine this architectural marvel rising from ashes? The Opéra de Marseille, also known as the Opéra Municipal, stands as a testament to the city’s enduring love for the arts. Originally built in 1787, the first true theatre, the Grand-Théâtre or Salle Bauveau, hosted legendary performances. Think Verdi’s Rigoletto and Il Trovatore gracing its stage in 1860. Imagine the mesmerizing voice of Adelina Patti echoing through the hall in 1866. The Opéra de Marseille even witnessed French premieres of masterpieces like Aida in 1877 and Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West in 1912. But tragedy struck. In 1919, a devastating fire ravaged the 18th-century theatre. Only the outer shell and the stoic stone colonnade remained. Yet, like a phoenix, the Opéra de Marseille was reborn. The current building opened its doors in 1924, a magnificent Art Deco temple. Designed by architects Ebrard, Castel, and Raymond, it incorporated the surviving colonnade and the original box office. The auditorium, with its classic urn shape, three rings of boxes, and a large sculpted frieze by Antoine Bourdelle, is a feast for the eyes. The Opéra de Marseille has also been a launching pad for renowned singers. Alfredo Kraus, Plácido Domingo, and Renata Scotto all made their French debuts here. But be warned, the audience, especially those perched in the top gallery, “the gods,” are known for their discerning taste. So, as you stand before the Opéra de Marseille, remember its fiery past and its triumphant rebirth. It’s more than just a building; it’s a symbol of Marseille’s unwavering passion for art and culture.
