From an outbuilding of the Wheatsheaf Public House to a grand structure on Chalk Hill, the Bushey & Oxhey Methodist Church has a captivating story. We’re standing before a testament to the dedication and faith of the local Methodist community. Let’s journey back to 1875, where our story begins. Imagine a small group of Methodists gathering for worship, not in a traditional church setting, but in an outbuilding of a pub. Later, their meeting place shifted to Oxhey Place Farm. This highlights their commitment, even without a dedicated space. Their persistence paid off. In 1885, they acquired a former Plymouth Brethren iron church on Villiers Road. This marked a significant step, their first official church home. The first service in May 1886 was undoubtedly a momentous occasion. Almost immediately, a Sunday School was formed, further solidifying the church’s role in the community. The burgeoning congregation soon outgrew the iron church. In 1903, land at the junction of King Edward Road and London Road was acquired. Fundraising began, and on May 24, 1905, a new church designed by C Bell, Withers, and Meredith was consecrated. The following year, the organ was installed, adding to the grandeur. What happened to the old iron church? It was ingeniously re-erected beside the new one and used as a schoolroom. The Villiers Road site was later developed with houses. In 1928, the church was officially renamed Bushey & Oxhey Methodist Church, recognizing its expanded reach. The Galahad Room, an extension for the Sunday School and weekday meetings, was opened in 1930. The iron church, having served its purpose, was finally demolished in 1963 to make way for a modern Sunday School Hall. The Bushey & Oxhey Methodist Church continued to evolve. Renovations and internal remodeling took place in 1981-82. During this period, services were held in the School Hall. In 1986, the church celebrated its centenary, a testament to its enduring presence. Today, the Bushey & Oxhey Methodist Church stands as a symbol of unwavering faith. It serves as a vibrant hub for worship, fellowship, and service to the community.
