In 1937, a dream took root. A group of passionate classical musicians, led by the visionary engineer Alexis Boutros, established the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts. The Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts, known as ALBA, blossomed in Beirut, becoming Lebanon’s first national institution of higher education. Imagine the vibrant energy of those early days. The Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts quickly expanded beyond music. By 1943, it housed a branch of architecture, sponsored by the renowned French engineer Daniel Abou Dargham. A school of letters followed in 1948, producing graduates specializing in literature, history, and geography. The Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts continued to evolve, adding political and economic science in 1949 and, briefly, a school of law in 1950. This flourishing institution embraced diverse artistic disciplines. It established a school of classic dance, acting, and sculpture, nurturing creativity in all its forms. The Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts embraced the changing times. It introduced publicity and information studies in 1975 and audio-visual production in 1987. Urban studies followed in 1994, reflecting the academy’s commitment to addressing the needs of a growing urban landscape. In 1988, the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts merged with the University of Balamand, ensuring its continued growth and influence. Despite the challenges of the Lebanese Civil War, Dean Georges Haddad, appointed in 1979, steered the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts through difficult times, culminating in the merger with the University of Balamand. The Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts continued to innovate. In 2000, it launched English-language programs in Interior Architecture and Design and Graphic Design under the guidance of George Fiani. The academy expanded further in 2009, offering Architecture and Computer Graphics and Interactive Media programs at the Balamand Campus. The Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts continues to thrive. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of artistic vision and educational dedication. It has shaped generations of artists, architects, designers, and thinkers who have contributed to Lebanon’s cultural landscape and beyond. Today, the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts offers a diverse array of programs. These include Architecture, Decorative Arts, Plastic Arts, Cinema and Audiovisual Directing, and Urban and Regional Planning, taught in French at its Beirut campus.
