Fifty students. That’s how many began the journey at Shibuya Makuhari Singapore School in April 1991. This wasn’t just any school. This was the first Japanese overseas boarding senior high school outside the United States and Europe. Right here before us stands Waseda Shibuya Senior High School. Its story began humbly.

Waseda Shibuya Senior High School wasn’t always the prestigious institution it is today. It started in a temporary facility a local Japanese kindergarten. Imagine the contrast. The bustling energy of a modern high school now housed within these walls. It was once a small space for young children.

The school’s initial 50 students hailed from Singapore Brunei Malaysia and Thailand. Their families lived across Southeast Asia. These pioneers laid the foundation for the school’s international success. It was a brave leap of faith. They were forging a path for future generations of Japanese students in the region.

The Singaporean government offered incredible support. They leased 20000 square meters of land to the school. Toshio Iwasaki of the Journal of Japanese Trade & Industry called the terms very favorable. This governmental support was pivotal in enabling the growth of Waseda Shibuya Senior High School. The building of the school its athletic facilities and dormitories followed. By September 1991 students moved into their permanent campus. The initial vision had transformed into reality.

In 2002 a pivotal moment arrived. Waseda Shibuya Senior High School became affiliated with Waseda University. This cemented its prestigious status. The name change reflected this significant evolution. It was no longer simply a school. It was now part of a wider esteemed educational network.

Today Waseda Shibuya Senior High School boasts modern facilities. It has dormitories allowing students to continue their studies even if their families move overseas. These aren’t just rooms. They’re homes away from home. There are 187 single occupancy rooms 116 for boys and 71 for girls. Around half the student body lives in these dormitories.

Even more intriguing is the school’s astronomical observatory. Opened in 1991 it’s not just for Waseda students. As part of a Japan-Singapore educational exchange it also welcomes local Singaporean secondary school students. It serves as a symbol of cross-cultural collaboration.

The school is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to ambition adaptability and international cooperation. Waseda Shibuya Senior High School stands as a beacon of Japanese education in Singapore. Its legacy continues to shape the lives of countless students.
