Have you noticed how Masjid Bencoolen seamlessly blends into its surroundings? It is an architectural marvel of integration. This mosque stands on Bencoolen Street in Singapore. It is not just a place of worship. It is also part of the 12-story Somerset Bencoolen serviced apartment tower.

Masjid Bencoolen has a rich history. It began in 1825 as a simple attap mosque. Bencoolen Muslims built it. In 1845, Syed Omar bin Aljunied replaced it with a permanent structure. He was an Arab merchant.

In 2001, the area underwent redevelopment. The original mosque was demolished to make way for the Somerset Bencoolen complex. But the spirit of Masjid Bencoolen lived on. The new mosque was integrated into the building. It reopened in 2004.

In 2019, an upgrading program was announced. It cost about S$4 million. The renovation increased the capacity from 450 to 1450 people.

Masjid Bencoolen retains its Indian heritage. You can see this in its official name and signboards. Religious classes are offered in Tamil. During Friday prayers, the mosque is full. Workers from nearby offices come for prayers. The mosque is fully air-conditioned. There is parking in the basement.

Bencoolen Street itself has an interesting past. In 1685, the British renamed Bengkulu to Bencoolen. It is on the coast of West Sumatra. When Sir Stamford Raffles arrived in Singapore in 1819, Bencoolen Malays came with him. They settled near Bencoolen Street. The street was named to remember Raffles’ time in Bencoolen.

The Bencoolen Street Bridge is another landmark. It was completed in 1885. James MacRitchie designed it. He also oversaw its construction. Syed Alwee bin Ali Aljunid’s father paid for the bridge. Syed Alwee’s grandfather built Masjid Bencoolen.

Masjid Bencoolen is more than just a building. It is a testament to Singapore’s history. It reflects the diverse cultures that have shaped this island nation. It stands as a symbol of faith.
