Gazing at the Colegio San Jose de Loyola – Universidad de Teologia, one can almost hear the echoes of history whispering through its walls. This grand institution, nestled in the heart of Buenos Aires, has witnessed the ebb and flow of Argentine life since its inception in 1858. Founded by Father Diego Barbe, Juan Magendie, and Brother Joannes Arostegui, the Colegio San Jose de Loyola was initially established to provide a comprehensive education rooted in Catholic tradition. Its founders, affectionately nicknamed the “Bayonne Fathers” by locals, instilled a rigorous curriculum that blended religious instruction with intensive studies and a healthy dose of sports. Colegio San Jose de Loyola quickly gained recognition for its high standards, even attracting the attention of General Bartolome Mitre. Mitre’s frequent visits and conversations with Father Barbe led to the creation of Argentina’s first national schools, modeled after Colegio San Jose de Loyola’s successful approach. The institution’s prestige grew, and in 1880, it became the first private school incorporated into the national education system. The Colegio San Jose de Loyola’s influence extended beyond academics. Its alumni list reads like a who’s who of Argentine history, boasting presidents, senators, a cardinal, a general who founded YPF (the national oil company), scientists, explorers, jurists, artists, and even a tango lyricist. From Hipolito Yrigoyen to Ricardo Fort, these individuals shaped Argentina’s destiny in diverse fields. The architectural evolution of Colegio San Jose de Loyola reflects its rich history. The original structure, built in 1859, underwent several expansions. A distinctive crenellated viewpoint was added, followed by a chapel in 1891, designed by R.P. Pommes in the style of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. In 1910, Pablo Hary, an alumnus and architect, redesigned the tower to house Buenos Aires’ first astronomical observatory, the Observatorio San Jose, still functioning today. The eclectic grand hall, completed in 1915, boasted state-of-the-art technology for its time. Today, the Colegio San Jose de Loyola – Universidad de Teologia stands as a testament to the enduring power of education and tradition. Its neo-Gothic and Italianate north side contrasts with the neoclassical French style of the south facade and main entrance, crowned by a wrought-iron marquee. The institution has faced challenges, including a near closure in 1998 due to financial difficulties. A public outcry and intervention by the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires, along with President Carlos Menem’s declaration of the building as a National Historic Monument, ultimately saved the Colegio San Jose de Loyola.
