Was it truly faith freedom that Gustav Adolf secured here? We are standing before the Gustav-Adolf-Denkmal in Breitenfeld. It is a monument steeped in history. This monument commemorates a pivotal figure. That figure is Gustav Adolf. He was the King of Sweden from 1611 to 1632.

Gustav Adolf is credited with Sweden’s rise as a great European power. During his reign, Sweden became a primary military force. This was during the Thirty Years’ War. He helped determine the political and religious balance of power in Europe.

The Gustav-Adolf-Denkmal stands east of Breitenfeld. Breitenfeld is a district in the northwest of Leipzig. It lies between Leipzig’s center and Delitzsch.

The monument’s construction dates back to the 19th century. It was erected in 1831. The fence was added in 1881. The monument reflects classicism and historicism in its art style. Ferdinand Gruner commissioned it.

The Gustav-Adolf-Denkmal is in good condition. You can visit it. It features a sandstone block on a pedestal. The block sits on an artificial hill.

The inscription reads “Glaubens-Freiheit / für die Welt / Rettete / bei Breitenfeld / Gustav Adolf / Christ und Held / Am 7. September 1631 1831”. This translates to “Faith Freedom / for the world / Saved / at Breitenfeld / Gustav Adolf / Christ and Hero / On September 7, 1631 1831.” The inscription highlights the importance of the Battle of Breitenfeld.

The Gustav-Adolf-Denkmal commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Breitenfeld. The battle occurred during the Thirty Years’ War. The battle was on September 7, 1631.

Gustav Adolf was posthumously named Gustavus Adolphus the Great. The Riksdag of the Estates gave him this name in 1634. He is seen as one of history’s greatest military commanders. He used an early form of combined arms tactics. His most notable victory was the Battle of Breitenfeld.

He died a year later at the Battle of Lützen. Count Axel Oxenstierna assisted him. Oxenstierna was the Lord High Chancellor of Sweden. He acted as regent after Gustav Adolf’s death.

There is also a Gustav-Adolf-Gedenkstätte in Lützen near Leipzig. The memorial includes a large stone. It marks the spot where Gustav Adolf died in the Battle of Lützen in 1632. In 1837, Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed a cast-iron canopy. It was erected over the stone. In 1907, a Gustav-Adolf-Kapelle was added. Swedish wooden houses complete the memorial. One houses a small museum.

So next time when you think of faith freedom, remember Gustav Adolf. Remember the battle and this Gustav-Adolf-Denkmal.
