Along Allée Duguay Trouin a Parisian street whispers a tale. This unassuming street in the 6th arrondissement holds a piece of naval history. It is named after René Duguay-Trouin a legendary French privateer.

Duguay-Trouin’s life was one of daring exploits. He rose from humble beginnings to become a Lieutenant General of the Royal Navy. His bravery and skill earned him fame and fortune. He fought in numerous battles against the English and the Dutch. He was a formidable opponent on the high seas. Allée Duguay Trouin stands as a quiet reminder of his accomplishments.

The street itself is relatively short. It stretches from Rue d’Assas to Rue de Fleurus. Its original alignment was maintained except for a few buildings. These buildings slightly recede from the main alignment. Originally named Rue Thimeray the street’s name changed around 1807. The change honored Duguay-Trouin after his death.

This wasn’t always a peaceful place. The area once housed underground quarries. These quarries caused sinkholes in 1813 1848 and 1879. The sinkholes thankfully didn’t cause major damage. The quarries’ existence influenced Allée Duguay Trouin’s early days. Access was limited by wooden gates until around 1810.

Today Allée Duguay Trouin is a mix of residential buildings and significant institutions. The French UNICEF committee has its headquarters here. So does the Assembly of French Departments. Number 7 housed nuns until 1903. Their building was replaced in 1976. This area reflects the layers of Paris’s history.

Duguay-Trouin’s legacy extends beyond the street’s name. He was buried in Saint-Roch Church in Paris. Later his remains were moved to Saint-Malo Cathedral. His story continues to inspire. The Allée Duguay Trouin serves as a lasting tribute to this remarkable man. It’s a testament to his courage skill and impact on French naval history. Remember this story as you walk Allée Duguay Trouin. It’s more than just a street. It’s a living piece of history.
