Habib Kuncung, a revered Islamic scholar, arrived in Betawi, historical Jakarta, and found his spiritual home at Masjid Jami At Taubah. It was originally built in the 18th century by Habib Abdullah Ja’far Al Haddad, Habib Kuncung’s great-grandfather. Initially, the mosque grounds held only two tombs. As generations passed, more descendants of the founder, including Habib Kuncung, were laid to rest there. Habib Kuncung’s life is shrouded in mystique. Born in 1838 in Tarim, Yemen, he journeyed through the Netherlands, Malaysia, and Singapore, seeking knowledge and spreading his teachings. The nickname “Kuncung” comes from his distinctive conical cap, a gift from Bugis royalty. He was known for his khoriqul a’dah, extraordinary abilities beyond human comprehension. Some believed he could bend space and time. Anecdotes tell of him declining invitations to Pekalongan, only to be found there, inexplicably ahead of his would-be companions.
