How about stepping into a world where architecture meets faith? Here at u00c9glise Notre-Dame de Jamhour, the story begins not with stone but with a vision. This church is more than a building. It’s a testament to modern design and spiritual reflection.

In 1950 a contest was held for its design. The goal was to create a church to unite all students of Collège Notre-Dame de Jamhour. A young French architect Jacques Bosson won. However construction was delayed due to funding issues. The church’s location was preserved until construction commenced.

Father Bonnet-Eymard, the college rector, initiated construction in 1964. Bosson used cement to his advantage. He removed pillars and created a circular praying area. This ensured everyone could see the altar. It was placed at the circle’s edge not in the center. Behind the altar is the sacristy. A skylight separates it and supports the roof vaults.

Acoustics were a key consideration. Concrete can be very resonant. To combat this, the church was covered with ‘ramlé’ stone. This porous stone absorbs echoes. Its warm color adds to the ambiance.

The stained glass is particularly special. Bosson collaborated with Gabriel Loire from Charters in France. Loire used a modern technique. He used thick slabs of tinted glass instead of tinted plates. These slabs were joined with cement not lead or plaster. The stained glass is symbolic not figurative.

Loire named his work “Hortus Conclusus” or the Enclosed Garden. This symbolizes Heaven on Earth. It represents the soul’s communion with God. The Enclosed Garden evokes the Sacred Garden of the Song of Songs. It provides peace and joy found in God’s creation.

As you enter u00c9glise Notre-Dame de Jamhour note the welcoming atmosphere. The ceiling resembles immobilized waves embracing the light. Reflections from the stained glass blur the line between heaven and earth. The sanctuary feels like a forest. Bluish glows create a moonlit effect symbolizing the Virgin Mary.

Although there are no literal trees or leaves a garden dances in the light. It twinkles and trickles within the vaults. Mary appears blue and beautiful. Almond trees reach for the stars. Roses bow in prayer. Jesus seemingly brushes a cedar’s boughs.

In this blue ocean communion with God unfolds. Each stained glass panel leads to the next. Finally you experience the red Sun of Passion. This tells a story of true love. The u00c9glise Notre-Dame de Jamhour stands as a giant marguerite. It connects us with God. Nature’s dance accompanies us toward the Virgin Mary.
