Yet, from the ashes, hope arose. Patriarch Ignace Joseph III Younan, since his appointment in 2009, held a vision to see this cathedral restored. He yearned to rebuild not just stones and mortar, but a symbol of faith, resilience, and coexistence. In 2022, that dream came to fruition. The newly consecrated St. George Syriac Catholic Cathedral now stands proudly, a beacon of light in a city that has known both great joy and deep sorrow. Many present-day Syriac Catholics in Lebanon are descendants of those who fled the genocide in Turkey in 1915. They sought refuge in Lebanon, where their patriarchs encouraged them to focus on commerce and business rather than politics, resulting in a historically limited political representation. Inside these walls, you can almost hear the echoes of Bishop Boutros’ words, lamenting the Beirut port explosion and its impact on his community. Yet, his hope in the Lebanese people and his dedication to building a better Lebanon resonate strongly. The cathedral isn’t just a building.
