1924. A grand edifice rises on Dongjiangwan Road, near the intersection of Sichuan North Road and Huangpu River. This is the future site of the Japanese Marine Special Naval Landing Forces Headquarters, a structure that would soon loom large in Shanghai’s history. The Japanese Marine Special Naval Landing Forces Headquarters, initially built as a commercial building, covered an area of approximately 6,130 square meters. The complex included office buildings, warehouses, and a 2,200 square meter drill ground. Can you imagine the echoes of military drills reverberating through this space? By 1935, expansion and reconstruction transformed the site into the command center for the Japanese SNLF. This expansion was fueled by Japan’s growing ambitions in Shanghai. The reconstructed headquarters housed the 2,200 square meter drill ground, a constant reminder of the occupying force. This very ground witnessed the launch of Japanese attacks in 1932 and 1937. After Shanghai’s fall in November 1937, the Japanese Marine Special Naval Landing Forces Headquarters became the nerve center of their control. The building’s prominent observation deck, with its towering flagpole, became a symbol of Japanese military might. Following Japan’s surrender in 1945, the Nationalist government took control. It became the Jiangsu Provincial Garrison Headquarters and later, the Shanghai Port Command Headquarters. After the liberation of Shanghai in 1949, the People’s Liberation Army took over the Japanese Marine Special Naval Landing Forces Headquarters. It continued its role as a key military site. Even into the 1990s, the surrounding area was designated as a military zone. The area bustled with commercial activity. Shops lined the streets below the imposing structure. More recently, adherence to regulations prohibiting military commercial activities resulted in the closure of these businesses. The sealed storefronts serve as silent witnesses to the area’s transformation. Today, the Japanese Marine Special Naval Landing Forces Headquarters stands as a stark reminder of a turbulent chapter in Shanghai’s history. Its walls have witnessed conflict, occupation, and ultimately, the city’s resilience.
