The area was once known as Bishop’s Walk and Bishop’s Meadow, owned by the Church of England. In the late nineteenth century, the Bishop of London, John Jackson, decided they needed a public park. He gifted the lands to the Fulham District Board of Works on the condition they built an embankment to protect the palace from flooding. They created a lush, green area and in 1893, Bishop’s Park was opened to the public. It’s hard to imagine a park in London being given away for the price of an embankment in this day and age.
