Can you imagine a museum housed within the oldest surviving half-timbered house in Beuel? Here at the Heimatmuseum Beuel, nestled in Wagnergasse (formerly Steinerstraße), history comes alive. The Heimatmuseum Beuel opened its doors on June 7, 1986. This wasn’t just any museum opening. It marked the arrival of the first city history museum in the Bonn area. The Heimatmuseum Beuel quickly gained popularity. It expanded its collection with countless artifacts, generously donated by the people of Beuel and Bonn. Some were carefully acquired by the museum itself. The museum isn’t confined to just one building. It occupies a small complex, forming a “museum island.” The oldest structure on this island is a barn from 1662, originally from Wachtberg. Interestingly, one of the houses here has a rather unique claim to fame. Its sturdy stone foundation allowed it to withstand the devastating flood of 1784, a feat few other Beuel buildings could manage. Inside the Heimatmuseum Beuel, you’ll find a journey through time. Exhibits showcase the prehistorical development of Beuel, from Roman times to the present day. One key exhibit focuses on Beuel’s main pre-industrial trade: its laundries. Here, you can trace the evolution from laborious handwashing to large-scale operations. The museum also offers glimpses into domestic life, with displays of period furniture, an old schoolroom, and even a vintage hairdressing salon. Outside, a herb garden, old gravestones, and two unexploded aerial bombs provide further historical context. The Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Beuel am Rhein e.V. (HGV Beuel) supports and maintains the Heimatmuseum Beuel. Remarkably, the museum and its tours are run entirely by volunteers. They offer guided tours and even special activities for children. The city of Bonn occasionally uses the museum’s unique setting for civil wedding ceremonies.
