In 1944, a vision began to take shape. Dr. Salvador Zubirán established a small unit within Mexico City’s General Hospital. This marked the humble beginnings of what we now know as the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán. It initially focused on metabolic and nutritional disorders, a pressing concern in Mexico at the time. The formal inauguration of the Hospital for Nutrition Diseases took place on October 12, 1946. The Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán wasn’t just a hospital. In 1955, the hospital’s name transitioned to the National Institute of Nutrition, reflecting its expanding scope. Later, in 1981, it was renamed to honor its founder, becoming the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán. The Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán has consistently pushed the boundaries of medical knowledge. Its research has touched upon various crucial areas. These include nutrition, reproductive medicine, degenerative diseases, and infectious diseases. The Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán also played a significant role during the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. It actively participated in patient care and research, publishing numerous articles in both national and international journals. The institute has a rich history of innovation. It published the first issue of the Revista de Investigación Clínica in 1948-1949. It established master’s and doctoral courses in collaboration with UNAM. It even developed a patented invasive ventilator, the SZ20, in 2020. Today, the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán stands as a leading institution in Latin America.
