“Just a normal church” some might say. But Lindehøj Kirke is more than meets the eye. This is not just a place of worship. It is a testament to community spirit. It shows the power of collective action.
Lindehøj Kirke’s story began with a population boom. Herlev Kommune’s western expansion needed a church. Inspired by a similar project, residents organized. They formed a church committee in 1964. Their goal was to build their own church.
Initially, the committee had to raise 50% of the funds. But a law change allowed loans. However, construction quotas still existed. The committee found a way around them. They decided to build the Lindehøj Kirke themselves.
Architect Holger Jensen designed an economical project. It could be built by non-professionals. Fifty-three volunteers signed up. They would dedicate their evenings to the church. Restrictions were lifted just before the start. Yet, the volunteers continued. They stuck to their self-build plan. Larger tasks were put out for tender.
Construction began in November 1967. It started with demolishing old barracks. The salvaged materials were used in the new church. Herlev Menighedsråd oversaw the finances. The budget was 876.000 krone for the initial phase. The vision was a small intimate church. It was meant for a parish of 4-5000 people.
“Vestre distrikt” grew beyond expectations. Lindehøj Sogn became Herlev’s largest parish. It has around 17.000 residents today.
In spring 1969 construction accelerated. Lindehøj Kirke was completed quickly. The topping-out ceremony was on April 25 1969. The church was inaugurated on Sunday October 5 1969.
Lindehøj Kirke is younger than most Danish churches. It was built in 1969. Its modern architecture reflects this. The engaged community is visible. The high level of activity is obvious. The many volunteers show dedication.
