Were these fields always bustling with students? The Auckland University of Technology North Campus sits here now. It has a history intertwined with the growth of Auckland. AUT North Campus wasn’t always a university campus. Its roots trace back to 1895 when the Auckland Technical School first opened its doors. It was an evening school, a testament to the growing demand for technical training in a rapidly developing New Zealand. The institution evolved. It became the Seddon Memorial Technical College in 1913, named after the long-serving New Zealand premier, Richard Seddon. Later, it transformed into the Auckland Technical Institute and then the Auckland Institute of Technology. Finally, in 2000, it achieved university status, becoming the Auckland University of Technology we know today. AUT North Campus, specifically, is home to the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences. The School of Education is also located here. This campus is known for its park-like grounds, offering a tranquil setting for learning. Within its grounds, you’ll find a major sports and fitness centre. It houses a gymnasium, weights room, testing equipment, even a golf swing clinic and indoor courts. AUT North Campus also has a library, student services centre, and an early childhood centre. Various food outlets and a university bookshop cater to the student population. Interestingly, the North Campus has a strong connection to health services. Five health clinics operate within the NorthMed Health Clinic building. These clinics offer services in oral health, physiotherapy, podiatry, psychotherapy, and ultrasound. The proximity to the AUT Millennium Institute of Sport and Health further strengthens this health and wellbeing focus. AUT North Campus is more than just buildings and facilities. It’s a vibrant hub of learning, sport, and community. It stands as a testament to the evolution of education in Auckland. From humble beginnings as an evening school, it has grown into a key part of a modern university, contributing significantly to the city’s intellectual and sporting landscape.
