An older, two-lane bridge served the community for many years. It even earned the distinction of being the second busiest two-lane bridge in all of Minnesota, second only to the Hastings High Bridge. To keep traffic flowing during construction, the new bridge was built in halves. One half of the new bridge was constructed while the old bridge remained in use. Then, the old bridge was demolished, and the second half of the new bridge took its place. Finally, traffic was directed down the middle of the completed bridge to allow for finishing touches on the outer edges.
