Imagine Vauréal not just as a place, but as a storybook opened to a page filled with unexpected connections. Vauréal, a commune in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, might seem like just another dot on the map. Yet, it holds a unique charm. It is located 30.6 km from the heart of Paris.

Vauréal’s story begins long before the high-speed trains. Once, it was a small village. In the early 1980s, it had only 800 residents. Fast forward to 2022, and Vauréal boasts a population of over 16,000. These people are called Vauréaliens.

What makes Vauréal truly fascinating is its link to a faraway land. Henri Menier, a French chocolate maker, owned a château in Vauréal. Menier named the 70-metre-high Vauréal Falls. These falls are on Anticosti Island in Quebec, Canada.

Let’s delve a bit deeper into the past of Vauréal. The area’s history stretches back to the Neolithic period. An allée couverte, a type of megalithic tomb, stands as a testament to its ancient roots. In 1433, during the Hundred Years’ War, the village was attacked by the English. They pillaged and burned Vauréal, along with neighboring Courdimanche and Puiseux.

Now, if you are planning to visit Vauréal, keep in mind that there is no direct Metro or RER station. The closest station is Cergy – Le Haut. It’s in the neighboring commune of Cergy, about 2.2 km from the center of Vauréal. However, several bus lines connect Vauréal with Cergy-Pontoise and surrounding areas. These include lines 34, 38, 40, 47, and 48.

Education is important here. Vauréal hosts eight primary schools. There are also two junior high schools: La Bussie and Les Toupets. Lycée Camille Claudel is the senior high school.

The name Vauréal has an interesting origin too. It comes from the Latin “vallis regalis,” meaning “royal valley”. In 1656, Antoine de Guérapin changed the name to Vauréal. He was the lord of the area since 1644. During the French Revolution, the commune was temporarily renamed Lieux.

Now, as you wander through Vauréal, remember that it is not just a modern suburb. It is a place with a rich history. The Château de Vauréal is one of the places to see. The first château here likely dated back to the 13th century. Antoine Guérapin became its owner in 1656. He began extensive restoration work. Louise-Adélaïde de Bourbon-Conti rebuilt the château. She designed the park in the French style.

So, when you leave Vauréal, remember this small town. A French chocolate maker saw something special in this place. He immortalized its name on a waterfall far away in Canada. This is the magic of Vauréal. It is a story of connection, resilience, and unexpected legacies.
