Once a hub of industry, Charlton Riverside now pulses with regeneration. This area along the Thames holds stories of innovation and transformation. Charlton Riverside formerly known as New Charlton sits in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

Imagine the clatter of machinery and the sparks flying from metalworks. In the mid-19th century industry took root here. The opening of a private railway to Angerstein Wharf in 1852 spurred development. A key player was Siemens Brothers Telegraph Works. Although largely in Woolwich Siemens made transatlantic cables in the 1880s. The company also contributed to the PLUTO project in World War II.

However the area faced decline in the 1960s. Factories closed including Siemens Brothers in 1968. But Charlton Riverside did not stay dormant.

After the Thames Barrier opened in 1983 regeneration began. The Mayor of London identified it as an Opportunity Area in 2008. A masterplan agreed in 2012 guides the area’s transformation. It envisions new neighborhoods with family homes. The industrial heritage shapes streets and spaces.

Now envision modern retail parks bustling with shoppers. Greenwich Shopping Park and Stone Lake Retail Park offer a variety of stores. A large Sainsbury’s superstore opened in 2015. IKEA arrived in 2019 adding to the commercial mix.

But traces of industry remain. Aggregate Industries operates at Angerstein Wharf. This facility produces construction aggregate and cement.

Take a stroll along the Thames Path. It opened in 1996. Stop by the Anchor and Hope pub. Enjoy views of the Thames from its outdoor café. Look for the reconstructed watermen’s stairs a reminder of the river’s working past.

Charlton Riverside is also planned to offer 8000 new homes and 1000 new jobs by 2041.

Consider the blend of old and new at Charlton Riverside. From industrial powerhouse to revitalized community the area embodies change. It stands as a testament to London’s evolving landscape. The vision of the Charlton Riverside Masterplan includes family homes and a network of streets. These new homes are shaped by the area’s industrial heritage. This ensures the character of the location continues to live on.
